The return of Ronda Rousey came full circle last night (Fri., Dec. 30, 2016) at UFC 207 live on pay-per-view (PPV) from inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, as she made another walk to the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Octagon to challenge women’s Bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes in a huge main event to close out 2016. It was Rousey’s first bout since losing the title to Holly Holm at UFC 193 and Nunes’ first title defense since winning the belt over Miesha Tate at UFC 200 this past July.
Well, it didn’t take long for Nunes to absolutely obliterate Rousey worse than Holm did 13 months ago. Rousey tried to strike with a dilapidated defensive stance, but “Lioness” was too crisp with her punches. Nunes backed up “Rowdy” with countless combinations before slumping her over just 48 seconds into the first round. It was one of the more lopsided title fights in divisional history, even taking into account all of the quick finishes Rousey produced when she was queen.

With this win, Nunes moves even closer to becoming a bona fide MMA star. She dominated Rousey every second of the bout and proved that elite striking can reign supreme in the women’s bantamweight division. Considering Valentina Shevchenko and Julianna Pena have a matchup on the horizon at UFC on FOX 23, the winner seems like the most likely title challenger entering 2017. As for Rousey, retirement is very likely moving forward. More performances like this one could eventually diminish her global notoriety.
