Ricardo Lamas is eyeing a showdown against fellow top featherweight contender Frankie Edgar in May.
Currently, both Ricardo Lamas and Frankie Edgar are situated at the top of the featherweight rankings, right below interim champion Max Holloway. “The Answer” holds the number two spot, while “The Bully” is at number three.
UFC matchmaking has been recently questioned, particularly in terms of how fighter rankings are not usually followed when booking fights. But for Lamas, matching him against Edgar would clearly be the next logical move to make.
“It makes the most sense for my career, for his career, for No. 2 and No. 3 to go at it,” Lamas told MMA Junkie Radio.
In mid-February, Lamas and Edgar had a brief and cordial Twitter exchange, agreeing to fight some time in May. With only a verbal agreement in place, Lamas says he is merely waiting for the contract and for Edgar’s signature to be on it.
“He said he’s good to go middle of May, and I said I was down with that. Hopefully, Frankie’s a man of his word, and we’ll get this thing done.”
In January, Edgar underwent groin surgery to take care of a “nagging injury.” It remains to be seen if he’s ready to compete in May, booking the fight sounds like easy matchmaking.
