The IBJJF awarded Mackenzie Dern and and Leandro Lo top ranking and a $15,000 prize.
As spring creeps along and summer slowly welcomes us, the competitive grappling circuit enters one of the busiest times of the year. More promotions are gaining steam; the IBJJF prepares for its World Championships; and ADCC looms to cap it all off.
The International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation announced on Tuesday its number one rankings, and rewarded the top two black belts in the sport today. Leandro Lo and Mackenzie Dern walked away with those titles and $15,000 in winnings.
“Congratulations to the #1 ranked male and female athlete of the 2016/2017 season! Leandro Lo and Mackenzie Dern had a fantastic season, both winning and placing in many events and taking home a World title,” via the official IBJJF website. “These athletes showed great consistency all season and a strong will to succeed.”
Lo is one of the most highly regarded participants in the sport today. Lo is having an impressive 2017 that includes victories over the likes of Gordon Ryan at the ADCC Trials, Tanner Rice and Matheus Diniz at Pans, and a slew of other big victories throughout the tournament season. He’s expected to continue that trend at Worlds in a few weeks.
“I am very happy for this being a very good year,” Lo said on Instagram (translated from Portuguese). “I want to thank the crowd for all of the love and thank you to my sponsors.”
Dern may not have been as dominant this year as in some recent ones, but she’s still regarded as the top female competitor in the sport. She’s won multiple contests but the most glaring points of 2017 are her two losses to Tayane Porfirio and Beatriz Mesquita where she was submitted. Dern’s continued her transition to MMA, where she competed in March and remain undefeated. But remaining prominent in grappling was also on her radar for 2017 goals.
“So happy to finish my second year as the number one ranked female black belt,” Dern said on Instagram. “This year didn’t go exactly how I hoped but when I decided to start fighting in MMA one of my big goals was to complete one more year as the leader in the ranking, so I am so happy and want to thank everyone for all the support during this crazy year full of changes.”
