Leslie Smith ‘pissed as hell’ about ‘total bull’ stoppage against Cris Cyborg

Leslie Smith started an angry rant in the Octagon. She continued it later on social media.

Smith was visibly — and audibly — unhappy about the timing of the stoppage in her TKO loss to Cris Cyborg at UFC 198 on Saturday night in Curitiba, Brazil. Smith thought referee Eduardo Herdy should have let the fight go longer and she made it known right after the fight to whoever would listen. Cyborg rocked her, dropped her and had her in trouble, but Smith seemed to be intelligently defending herself when Herdy stepped in.

Smith wrote on Facebook that she was “pissed as hell” about the stoppage, which she described as “total bull.”

“The fights that were allowed to keep going in the same cage on the same night show that my fight was total bull,” Smith wrote. … “I’ll fight her again asap as long as there is a legit ref like Herb Dean.”

Herdy does have a history of objectionable stoppages. Most notably, he completely botched the finish of a bout between Leandro Silva and Drew Dober last year. Silva was working for a guillotine choke on Dober, but Dober escaped and was attempting to pass. Herdy stepped in and said Dober tapped out, giving the submission victory to Silva.

The Brazilian MMA Athletic Commission (CABMMA) ended up overturning the result of that fight to a no contest due to Herdy’s clear miscue.

On Saturday night, Cyborg was making her UFC debut. The bout was fought at a catchweight of 140 pounds. Smith typically fights at 135, while Cyborg is the Invicta FC women’s featherweight champion.
