No. 11-ranked UFC lightweight Dustin Poirier decided to re-sign (via FOX Sports) with the premier mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion after picking up three straight Octagon victories within the last 12 months.
“The Diamond” isn’t the only notable combatant to ink a new deal. Poirier joins popular talents like Alistair Overeem and Aljamain Sterling as recent fighters who’ve planted their flag next to the UFC brand.
After a tumultuous, but successful run in the featherweight division, the American Top Team (ATT) staple left behind memories of debilitating weight cuts to return to a lightweight division he called home for the first two years of his professional career.
Poirier, 27, is still very much in the prime of his career as he most recently bloodied up promising Irishman Joseph Duffy last month. There were no specifics given as to the length, or monetary value, of the deal, but it will undoubtedly help ease the pain of having to sit on the sidelines because of this.
More importantly, the money will go a long way towards caring for his first child.
