It has been 546 days since Tyron Woodley stepped inside the Octagon, deciding to wait for his Welterweight title shot opposite 170-pound wrecking ball Robbie Lawler in the main event of UFC 201 tonight (Sat., July 30, 2016) inside Philips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia. Lawler, meanwhile, is on a terrifying five-fight run that seemed endless.
Lawler came out of his corner looking to take control of the Octagon as Woodley wisely circled away. Woodley quickly switched gears, corning Lawler and uncorking a huge punch that missed its mark. Woodley laid on Lawler up against the fence, compelling the referee to separate them and get them back in the center of the cage. Lawler is being very patient — two minutes in and he hasn’t thrown a meaningful punch.
TOO PATIENT! Woodley unleashed a monster right hand that folded Lawler immediately. Lawler fell to the bottom of the cage and Woodley dropped five more unnecessary bombs until the referee peeled him off. Lawler tried to get back to his feet after the stoppage, but it was clear he was stung very bad.
