Luke Rockhold says teammate Daniel Cormier ‘sulking a bit’ after ‘big fall’ against Jon Jones

Luke Rockhold gives an update on Daniel Cormier after his devastating loss to Jon Jones at UFC 214.

Daniel Cormier is one of the hardest working athletes in MMA, and the former Olympian prides himself on his work ethic. That’s why, after giving his all against Jon Jones in their light heavyweight championship rematch at UFC 214, ‘DC’ broke down in tears in the Octagon.

Cormier, who lost to ‘Bones’ in their first bout at UFC 182, started off strong in the rematch but got caught with a left high kick in the third round. Smelling blood, Jones pounced on Cormier and brutalized him with elbows and ground and pound.

The American Kickboxing Academy product was devastated in the post-fight interview, but teammate Luke Rockhold says that his ‘spirits are coming back’.

But, the wound is still fresh, and Cormier is understandably upset after losing in the biggest fight of his career against his arch nemesis.

“He’s sulking a bit, but his spirits are coming back,” Rockhold told Ariel Helwani on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour. “And I think he’s got his family, he’s got everything going for him, so he’s got a bright future with anything he wants to do. Cormier is a sharp guy with a lot of things going on, so we’ll see. We’ll see where it all falls.”

Cormier is always in the public eye due to his broadcasting role with FOX Sports, but the 38-year-old has been notably quiet since losing to Jones, releasing the lone statement on social media thanking fans for the support.

Rockhold, 32, says his teammate and friend needs ‘some time’ to recover from the loss and re-embrace the public.

“I think, like anything, that was a big stage, that was a big moment, and it was a big fall,” Rockhold said. “So give him some time, the guy’s got a big heart and he’s got a lot of things going for him. So, time heals all.”

Cormier’s future is uncertain, but Rockhold is currently gearing up to fight David Branch at UFC Fight Night 116 on September 16. It’s been over a year since the Californian set foot in the Octagon, losing the middleweight title to Michael Bisping in his last bout at UFC 199.
