I hope you didn’t think a little thing like a near-death experience at the hands of Yoel Romero was going to deter a “Dragon” like Lyoto Machida, because the former light heavyweight champion expects to be right back in the title hunt later this year.
Just as soon as he disposes of fellow aging veteran Dan Henderson in April.
“I’m going through everything that I need to do in order to become a champion again,” Machida told SporTV (via Bloody Elbow). “The numbers never lie, I have great wins. I’m in the mix for a title shot very soon. I think the sport has evolved a lot and I have been evolving, too, despite my losses.”
Can’t fault a soon-to-be 38-year-old man for his optimism.
Machida (22-7) looked better than ever when he dropped to middleweight in late 2013, even in defeat to then-champion Chris Weidman. Unfortunately, “The Dragon” was subsequently ruined by Luke Rockhold and the aforementioned Romero in back-to-back fights.
Even if the Brazilian returns to form at UFC on FOX 19, I’m not sure a win over the increasingly-brittle “Hendo” makes him championship material.
