A planned headliner between Thiago “Marreta” Santos and Michal Materla for UFC Gdansk has been scrapped with reports that Materla has chosen to re-sign with KSW instead.
The UFC had hoped to put together an action packed middleweight headliner for their return to Poland in October of this year. They’d even apparently signed a local star to make his debut in the top spot on the card, hooking 33-year old home-grown KSW talent Michal Materla to face Thaigo Santos for the main event.
The move surprised many, as news that Materla had been arrested for suspected ties to organized crime surfaced back in December of last year. According to Polish media sources, he was released from temporary custody in July, a little over a month before news of his UFC signing. But, the story has since taken another unexpected turn, as Combate now reports that Materla’s UFC debut is off.
This latest twist doesn’t seem to have anything to do with his potential involvement in criminal activity, however. Instead it seems Materla got an offer he liked more: a new contract with KSW. And now Thiago Santos has a new fight as well.
The UFC reports, via press release, that Santos will not remain on the Gdansk card, instead taking on Jack Hermansson in Sao Paulo in a week later, on October 28th. Santos is coming off a two-round destruction of Gerald Meerschaert back at UFC 213, his second straight TKO win.
For Hermansson’s part, he’s bounced back well from a submission loss to Cezar Ferreira in November of 2016, racking up TKOs of Alex Nicholson and Brad Scott in the interim.
UFC Sao Paulo is expected to be headlined by a middleweight bout between Lyoto Machida and Derek Brunson. Here’s a look at the full card as it stands now:
Lyoto Machida vs. Derek Brunson

Demian Maia vs. Colby Covington
Thiago Santos vs. Jack Hermansson
Antonio Carlos Junior vs. Jack Marshman
Deiveson Figueiredo vs. Jarred Brooks
