Matt Hughes ‘awake and responsive’ following car train accident Friday morning

The MMA world was thrown on its head yesterday (Fri., June 16, 2017) when a truck driven by UFC Hall of Famer Matt Hughes was struck by an oncoming train, causing the former welterweight champion to be airlifted to a nearby hospital in Springfield, Illinois. The combat community has been on pins and needles ever since, wondering if Hughes will be able to make a full recovery.

According to a report earlier today (Sat., June 17, 2017) by MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani, Monte Cox, a longtime manager of Hughes, said that Hughes is “awake and responsive” after falling into a temporary coma.

“He is awake, but eyes closed,” Cox said. “Can squeeze hands.”

Cox added that doctors and family are “optimistic and hopeful” about Hughes’ current condition.

Hughes, 43, is widely considered one of the best welterweight fighters in MMA history and arguably the greatest champion in UFC history. He is one of the bigger ambassadors of the sport and rightfully received countless support from around the MMA community after his crash.
