Max Holloway vs. Anthony Pettis new UFC 206 main event, interim featherweight title rights on the line

130 0

With Daniel Cormier out of his UFC 206 main event matchup opposite Anthony Johnson due to injury, Max Holloway vs. Anthony Pettis will slide into the headlining spot on Dec. 10 live on pay-per-view (PPV) from Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, per a report by MMA Fighting.

The new main event will be for the interim featherweight title, which all but assures current 145-pound king Conor McGregor will be finally stripped of his title. Jose Aldo is the current interim featherweight champ, so he would then assume the role as undisputed champion heading into 2017.

This is especially big news for Holloway considering he has been deserving of a high-profile PPV spot after winning his last nine Octagon appearances. As for Pettis, this is the quickest way for him to finally get his hands on Aldo.

While McGregor has yet to agree to relinquish his featherweight title, which he hasn’t defended since winning it back at UFC 194, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has the right to strip “Notorious” if they choose to do so. This will probably cause some backlash from the promotion’s biggest ticket, especially since McGregor just became the first fighter in UFC history to simultaneously hold two titles with a win at UFC 205 over lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez, but UFC 206 needed to be saved in a big way.
