Michelle Waterson might know a thing or two about selling a fight, but her daughter has her beat in the cookie game.
A fixture on her mother’s social media, eight-year-old Araya recently went viral when she made a sales pitch to none other than UFC president Dana White, imploring him to help her achieve her goal of selling 2,000 boxes of Girl Scout cookies:
In the clip (which has almost 100,000 views), Araya declares herself the “boss of girl scouts” and asks White “from one boss to another” to help her out. She also told White that her door is always open if he needs help dealing with his fighters or his business.
White shared the clip on his Twitter, while also agreeing to purchase 1,000 boxes, a transaction that put Araya halfway to her goal.
According to Waterson, it didn’t take long to shatter it.
“Oh geez, she definitely broke her goal,” Waterson told MMA Fighting. “This is her first year as a girl scout and she brought the paperwork home and she saw the prizes and she said she wanted to sell 2,000 boxes of cookies. I’m not gonna shoot her dreams down, so I was like, ‘Alright, baby girl, that’s a big goal, but go for it if that’s your goal.’
“So she ended up selling Dana White a thousand. And then when he shared it on his social media, she got probably another close to a thousand cookie sales, and then Tony Robbins gave us a call and decided to buy another thousand. So she sold over 3,000 boxes of cookies.”
Of course, mom deserves more than a little credit for the assist. Not only for putting Araya’s pitch on her Instagram account, but for her and her husband Joshua doing what they can to instill proper values in their daughter. Waterson is actually working on writing children’s books revolving around the themes of integrity and good intentions that she hopes to be able to publish in the future when her fight schedule clears up.
For now, Waterson is just happy that there’s one kid who she knows listens to her.
“I think so, I think she thinks that I’m cool,” Waterson said, when asked if her daughter is still impressed by her fighting for a living. “But she’s grown up in the gym, so people that are larger than life like Holly Holm and Jon Jones and Dana White, these are people that she sees on a regular basis. I always imagine what the world is like through her little eyes.
“I do think she thinks I’m cool and she probably thinks I’m a nerd sometimes too because I’m just mommy and then we have a great relationship and I hope it just grows as she gets older.”
Waterson is back in action this Saturday at UFC on ESPN 2 in Philadelphia, where she fights Karolina Kowalkiewicz in a main card strawweight bout.
