Winning the UFC bantamweight title hasn’t changed Miesha Tate’s mind about Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino.
At a fan Q&A in Brisbane on Friday, Tate responded to rumors about Zuffa exploring the possibility of having Justino fight in the UFC by echoing past statements that she would be more than willing to step up in weight and face the feared Brazilian.
“I’ve been hearing [the rumors] for such a long time, I just don’t really know, I haven’t had that confirmed. But I am open to that fight,” Tate said. “Maybe doing it at a catchweight at 140. Tate (18-5) captured the UFC women’s bantamweight title in thrilling fashion at UFC 196 when she submitted Holly Holm with a fifth-round rear-naked choke.
Holm previously seized the title from Ronda Rousey, the division’s former standard-bearer who for years refused to meet “Cyborg” at a catchweight superfight which had the potential to be one of the biggest events in mixed martial arts history.
Justino (15-1, 1 NC) is currently Invicta FC’s reigning featherweight champion, but is in talks to make her UFC debut at UFC 198, which takes place May 14 at the 42,000-seat Atletico Paranaense soccer stadium in Justino’s hometown of Curitiba, Brazil.
While Justino’s relationship with Rousey is obviously on bad terms, she shares no such animosity with both Tate and Holm.
