Two big heavyweight matchups have been announced for Bellator’s back to back cards taking place in February.
The promotion announced the fights on Tuesday. The first is between Matt Mitrione and Sergei Kharitonov, which will headline Bellator’s Friday night card on February 15th at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.
Cheick Kongo will face Vitaly Minakov in a rematch the following day at the same venue. A highly anticipated welterweight grand prix quarter final fight between Paul Daley and Michael Page will headline that February 16th card.
Mitrione (13-6) missed out on a place in the final of Bellator’s heavyweight grand prix when he lost a decision to Ryan Bader in October. “Meathead” was on a four-fight winning streak before that loss, most notably picking up a first round KO over Fedor Emelianenko.
On the same night Mitrione lost to Bader, Kharitonov (27-6, 1NC) picked up a first-round knockout win over Roy Nelson. Signing for Bellator in 2016, the 38-year-old has picked up most of his recent wins for M-1 Challenge.
Kongo (29-10-2) is currently on a seven-fight winning streak, making it the best run of his 17-year MMA career. His last two wins have been first-round knockout wins over Timothy Johnson and Javy Ayala. The undefeated Minakov (21-0) holds a decision win over Kongo dating back to 2014, this will be his first return to Bellator since that fight took place. It is expected that the winner will face the Fedor Emelianenko vs. Ryan Bader winner next year.
Bellator’s February 15th show will be available to watch on both DAZN and Paramount Network, whilst the February 16th card will air exclusively on DAZN.
