A professional mixed martial artist stopped an attempted robbery in downtown Memphis, TN.

WMC Action News 5 out of Memphis, TN reports that last Saturday morning a local pro MMA fighter came to the aid of a woman being robbed in broad daylight. That outlet stated that the incident occurred near Second Street in the city’s downtown core.

Mandy ‘MissDemeanor’ Polk is the Good Samaritan who attempted to intervene in the incident. “When the woman yelled, ‘Help me, help me! Somebody help me!’ That’s when I knew I had to go,” said Polk.

Polk also told WMC Action News 5 that bystanders had already begun calling the police when she approached both the victim and her male assailant. When Polk got close enough, she grabbed the would-be robber and held him around the waist. She had hoped to contain the suspect until police arrived.

However, the suspect was able to wriggle free. In trying to evade Polk the individual lashed out, landing a punch on her chin. Polk, who has a pro-MMA record of 3-3 and an amateur record of 3-2, said her training in mixed martial arts allowed her to lessen the effect of the punch, as well as avoid further attacks.

“If I wasn’t trained, it would have been awful. It could have been very very bad for me if I didn’t know how to move and work myself out of the way,” said Polk.

Polk’s last fight was in December 2016 at RFA 46: Johnson vs. Tucker. At that event she lost via KO/TKO to Bellator veteran Katy Collins. Prior to that loss Polk was on a three-fight winning streak. According to Polk’s Facebook page, she is also a licensed referee/judge with the International Sports Karate and Kickboxing Association (ISKA).

After the tussle on Second Street, the suspected robber ran off. Before leaving, the suspect dropped their cellphone, which Polk later handed over to police. Reflecting on the incident, Polk stated, “I would encourage [more people] to learn self defense principles. That way they can recognize a true conflict or not.”
