Morning Report: Floyd Mayweather responds to Conor McGregor saying he will knock him out

Another day, another entry into the infinite morass that is Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor.

In the last two weeks, hype surrounding the biggest cross-over super-fight in the world has reached a fever pitch. UFC President Dana White, once seen as one of the biggest impediments to the creation of the bout, finally came out and said that he “doesn’t see how it doesn’t happen”, and McGregor himself said that the fight is “close to done” and being targeted for September. These comments came shortly after McGregor erupted at boxing media ringside at Madison Square Garden (at the professional debut of his friend and Irish Olympian, Michael Conlan) when McGregor screamed loudly to all that he was going “to shock the whole goddamn world” and knock out Floyd Mayweather.

Speaking with FightHype recently, Mayweather responded to McGregor’s most recent outburst, and Dana White’s recent change of heart towards making the fight happen, seemingly pleased with both.

“I feel like he’s entitled to feel the way he wants to feel. Only thing you can do is respect that.

“I just want to say, Dana White, I was overseas when they told me what you said. I wanna say, good work Dana White. Conor McGregor, they said you finally opened your mouth and you’re back to talking s**t and I say that’s cool too.”

Given Mayweather’s penchant for self-promotion, his answer is decidedly less bombastic than many would have anticipated now that the super-fight is becoming more of a reality. However, perhaps sensing this reaction, Mayweather outlined why he’s not taking shots at McGregor despite the fact that the Irish superstar has repeatedly gone after him.

“With me, it is what it is. If I can’t do nothing, everybody knows I can fight, if i can’t do nothing else. But when I’m not in the ring, I’m a gentleman. Outside the ring, I’m a gentleman.”

All-in-all, Mayweather seems very upbeat about the prospect of the fight finally happening, declaring that he calls the shots, while bouncing around merrily.

“It’s about what I say. It’s whatever I say. Like I’ve said before, it is what it is. If it happens, it happens. We’ll just see.”

Analyst buddies.

Wanna give a huge shout out and thank you to my guy @kennyflorian for coming up to San Jose for a couple days to help me prepare for my fight. Before fights he usually sends me a breakdown but this time he took it a step further and came to the @americankickboxingacademy and watched and helped. This dude is a legit 3rd degree black belt lol. I always wondered how he got so many rear choke finishes. Well now I know. Thanks so much brother. We are covering all bases. FIGHT ANNOUNCEMENTS

Erick Silva (19-7, 1 NC) vs. Yancy Medeiros (13-4, 1 NC); UFC 212, June 3.

TODAY IN MMA HISTORY

2003: Frank Shamrock returned to MMA after three years off to win the WEC light heavyweight championship by submitting Bryan Pardoe with an armbar at WEC 6. At that same event, Nick Diaz became the inaugural WEC welterweight champion by submitting Joe Hurley with a kimura.

2010: Georges St-Pierre defended his UFC welterweight championship by winning a unanimous decision over Dan Hardy at UFC 111. Also at this event, Shane Carwin knocked out Frank Mir to become the UFC interim heavyweight champion.

2015: At Bellator 135, Marcos Galvao submitted Joe Warren with a kneebar to become the Bellator bantamweight champion.

FINAL THOUGHTS

This is why Floyd wants to fight Conor. It’s an easy payday for a huge sum, and he finally has an opponent who will help in the promotional build up. At this point, I will honestly be let down if this thing doesn’t happen, despite having little interest in watching the actual in-ring action.

I hope y’all enjoyed the UFC free weekend, and if you didn’t catch Invicta, you should definitely run that back on Fight Pass. It was a really entertaining card. Take it easy and see y’all tomorrow.
