Morning Report: Floyd Mayweather Sr. to Conor McGregor: I’m a 64-year-old man and I’ll beat your ass

For the last year, the MMA and boxing communities have been taken over by the proposed crossover super-fight between UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor and boxing great Floyd Mayweather Jr. With UFC President Dana White now seemingly on board with making the fight a reality, fans are hoping the fight will be made for later this year, though there remains a healthy amount of skepticism as to whether the bout will actually materialize.

Even if the bout does happen, the general consensus among boxing aficionados is that McGregor, a man with zero professional boxing experience, stands little to no chance against one of the greatest boxers of all time. But Mayweather’s father, Floyd Mayweather Sr., is willing to take that even further, saying that McGregor wouldn’t stand a chance against him, much less his son.

“He don’t want that fight. Floyd’s gonna turn him upside down,” Mayweather Sr. told FightHype.com. “That be like you and Floyd in the ring! [Laughs]. He looks bad in the ring. That’s a done deal right there. They’ve already showed the best that he’s got.

“He ain’t nothing but talk! I told them people on the TV already, forget about Floyd. Let’s throw Floyd to the side. Here I am, I’m a 64-year-old man and I’ll beat your ass. I’ll beat the s**t out of McGregor! Anytime he wants it, let’s go.”

Mayweather Sr. was a talented boxer in his own right, amassing a 28-6-1 record and even competing against Sugar Ray Leonard during his rise to the top of the boxing world. He left fighting and began training boxers, working most notably with Oscar De La Hoya and even B.J. Penn for a short stint. Though he and his son had a tumultuous relationship, he resumed training Mayweather Jr. in 2013 and would, ostensibly, train him for a bout with McGregor.

As for why Mayweather Sr. thinks he could outbox a man almost 40 years his junior, it’s because he doesn’t put much stock in McGregor as a boxer. Mayweather thinks this is all a cash grab and that McGregor doesn’t know the the first thing about elite boxing requirements.

“I’m telling you right now, he can do all the stuff he want to do but this guy don’t know nothing about how to get your body right and the amount of time and everything you’ve got to do, he don’t know nothing about that.”

Safe to say the Mayweather family doesn’t think much of McGregor the boxer.

Tecia Torres.

Truth be told, for as long as I can remember I’ve struggled with my body image. Thanks to my parents I am naturally gifted with a muscular petite frame. Growing up I was on the sour end of bullying, to the point were girls in my middle school class would draw a “masculine muscular” looking women on the board, in an attempt to make fun of me. It worked. I felt alone and like my body was different. Looking back I was different. My young body was a product of my hard work. I’ve been a martial artist since age 5 and I’ve always been an athlete. During these years, adult woman would always stop my mom and ask what I did. They loved my body. I never could quite grasp why they would want my figure for their own. Fast forward to a Mixed Martial Arts career in the @ufc. The bullying began again with other adult women competitors speaking up as if they had known me my entire life or were apart of my daily activity. Because I am in such phenomenal shape I must me using some type of performance enhancing drug. On The Ultimate Fighter rumor had it I was throwing up. I’ve always found these comments so hilarious. I’m confident in saying I’m one of cleanest athletes in the sport. I’m very open about my straightedge lifestyle. On the opposite side of silly adult bullying I am grateful to live in a generation where strong is being seen as beautiful and little girls are growing up knowing their bodies were made beautifully no matter what shape, size, or color it is. It took me a long time to love my body image. What motivates me even more is knowing that I’m inspiring all sorts of people to pursue their dreams and create goals. You are my motivation, so thank you for that and for following my career and life whether it’s during an up or a down. I love you. – Tecia P.S I’m going to be writing a first hand essay that will be published in @teenvogue similar to this. Look out for it in the next few months. XoKo : @ohrangutang : @cristinapilo

FIGHT ANNOUNCEMENTS

Vitor Belfort (25-14) vs. Nate Marquardt (35-17-2); UFC 212, June 3.

Dominique Steele (14-8) vs. Luke Jumeau (11-3); UFC Fight Night Auckland, June 11.

TODAY IN MMA HISTORY

2000: Mark Coleman defeated Akira Shoji, Kazuyuki Fujita, and Igor Vovchanchyn to win the Pride FC Openweight Grand Prix.

2009: Toby Imada recorded the 2009 Submission of the Year, scoring an inverted triangle over Jorge Masvidal in the Bellator lightweight tournament semifinals.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Maybe Conor will accept Mayfather’s challenge and he’ll give us a Million Dollar Baby moment.

(Sidebar: rewatching this, all I could think of was Art Jimmerson. Oh MMA, you wild beauty, you.) But as much as I decry Conor’s attempt at boxing, I’ve got to imagine he could in fact beat 64-year-old Mayweather.

Anyway, if you didn’t watch the Anthony Joshua-Vladdy Klitschko boxing match from over the weekend, do yourself a favor and go check it out. One of the few times in combat sports that a fight with as much significance as that one had, actually turns out to be an absolute heater. Best heavyweight fight in many, many years.

And we’re back for another off week. No UFC or Bellator but bear with us through this empty patch. Something big will happen soon I’m sure. Take it easy and Conor bless.
