Morning Report: Joe Rogan speculates that Conor McGregor is not done with professional boxing

On Saturday, the second-biggest boxing event of the year took place when Canelo Alvarez finally fought Gennady Golovkin after years of build up. In most other years, this fight would have been the unquestioned event of the year. However, it happened to take place in the same year as the Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor superfight. And though MayMac is almost a month in the rear-view mirror, “The Money Fight” still casts a shadow over every other combat sports event in the world.

On the most recent edition of The Joe Rogan Experience, UFC commentator Joe Rogan did a fight companion to coincide with UFC Pittsburgh and the Alvarez-Golovkin fight card, and the conversation inevitably turned to McGregor and Mayweather, with Rogan suggesting that McGregor has a future in professional boxing, possibly even a rematch with Mayweather.

“He’s f**king Floyd Mayweather,” said Rogan. “He’s one of if not the best boxer ever and Conor did catch him with a couple things. . . They should [rematch]. Why not? I think Conor would have to beat somebody good in a boxing match and he would also have to have a real training camp.”

McGregor’s performance far surpassed the expectations of many with McGregor winning early rounds against Mayweather until the boxing legend came on strong as the fight progressed. But even more important than his improved boxing, McGregor showcased the most important skill in prizefighting: the ability to make people spend money. MayMac broke the PPV buy record in the U.K. and sold 6.5 million Pay-Per-View buys according to some reports. The ability to draw those types of numbers makes McGregor an enticing proposition for any professional boxer, possibly even Canelo Alvarez who is the biggest draw in boxing at the moment. Rogan at least thinks it’s a possibility and one that would get McGregor back into the ring.

“I don’t think [Conor is done boxing]. Look, he went the very first fight against the greatest ever and he didn’t look too bad. If there’s a legit, big fight – say if Canelo Alvarez steps up and says that he wants to fight Conor McGregor, [Conor] might do it.”

Canelo went to a controversial draw with Golovkin on Saturday and a rematch seems likely though not guaranteed. Alvarez could determine he’d rather take the perceived easier payday than rematch a man many thought beat him. Similarly, Golovkin might also jump at the chance to face a relative novice with the prospect of millions of dollars in PPV sales at the end. In either scenario, the financial incentives for all parties involved are enormous, though Rogan concludes by pointing out that there is one extremely large downside for McGregor: he has to take a beating significantly worse than the one he suffered from Mayweather.

“It wouldn’t be a smart move. The difference between Canelo and Floyd – Floyd was just a brilliant boxer. Canelo is a murderous puncher and he’ll f**k you up. He’ll hurt you.

“[Golvokin] is not a good fight for him either. Neither Canelo nor Golvkin is a good fight for him. They’re terrible fights for him. Those guys are different.”

DC’s post.

Life can be such a roller coaster. I think sometimes you have to just take a moment and breathe it in. You never know what’s gonna come your way. You try and handle it the best way you can. One thing that has been amazing is the support from you the fans. I have never felt so much love. It’s crazy because this all happened when I lost. Guys now I call upon you to take a breathe, lay off of Jones. Let him and his team figure out what’s going on and what happened. I was down and some may have kicked me but the majority of you showed compassion and love. After the fight Jones showed compassion, regardless of what has happened as humans we must show compassion. Jon is not on this ride alone, remember this man has a family. Let’s respect that. You don’t show ur support for me by hurting others. Again I thank you for ur unbelievable support and I trust that you guys will come thru again. DC @layziethesavage

That’s a lot of awesome in one picture.

Every second that he is on top of someone, Luke Rockhold is beating the unholy hell out of them. Legitimately may have the best ground game in MMA. Even Jacare doesn’t make people look as helpless as Rockhold does.

Hope y’all enjoyed the fights this weekend. We’re back at it for another fight weekend and the completely unexpected return of Yushin Okami to the UFC, this time as a light heavyweight. Should be interesting if nothing else.

Take it easy and see y’all tomorrow.
