This past Saturday at UFC 246, Roxanne Modafferi authored one of the biggest upsets in recent memory, taking a unanimous decision victory over rising contender Maycee Barber, handing the young wunderkind her first MMA loss. And considering the setback this is for Barber, her camp isn’t taking it all that well.
In the second round of their fight, Modafferi connected with with a punch that sent Barber tumbling to the canvas clearly showing pain in her left knee. After the bout it was revealed that Barber had suffered an ACL tear earlier in the fight, Bucky Barber released a now-deleted post on Instagram (quotation coming from WMMARankings.com) adamantly stating that the injury occurred in the first 10 seconds of the fight and questioning the validity of the loss.
“The work was in, the skill level at its peak her only way of defeat is if bad luck kissed her on the cheek. Ten seconds in a complete ACL tear turned the probable into the unlikely. Though she had her moments and showed more heart than most have ever witnessed the night ended with an [sic] Loss. However was it a loss? She was not beaten by a better skill set. She was beaten by one unfortunate step and turn of events. That is out of her control. The victory we take from this is we now know we have the highest level of heart to match the highest level of skill in the game. I have seen how athletes react when this injury occurs. Very very few stay standing let alone fight an MMA fight for 15 minutes and still survive. That is insane.”
“She will be back stronger and more dominant than ever and we as a team could not be more proud. The Future is real do not get confused with one step. The worst of luck smiles at us all! All we can do is smile back. She will see you all very soon. That which does not kill us makes us stronger. The Future, Version 2.0 to be feared.”
Earlier this week, Modafferi politely disputed the contention that the injury occurred 10 seconds into the fight given that Barber did not show signs of a problem until the second round, and after Bucky Barber’s latest comments, Modafferi once again showed class, graciously responding with props to Maycee Barber.
Meh, fathers are supposed to be biased and say stupid things. Mine used to say, “I’m proud of you…so are you retiring yet?” Not anymore, though. 🙂 At least she didn’t say it. I still respect Macyee for being a warrior. https://t.co/aeulab0edj

The win moved Modafferi up to No. 5 in the UFC rankings and given the landscape of the flyweight division, could put “The Happy Warrior” just one win away from a title shot.

Roxy, you have always been a great competitor and an even better human being. You went out and fought impressively against a very talented young fighter. Obviously a father has a side to take, but never allow that to upset or even disturb you. Be proud of a great performance https://t.co/ohKI4vdEGa
