Morning Report: Michael Bisping attacks “hypocrite” Yoel Romero for wanting an interim title fight with Anderson Silva

, / 46 0

It’s abundantly clear that there is no love lost between UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping and number one ranked middleweight Yoel Romero. But with Bisping tied up in fight with Georges St-Pierre at some nebulous point in the future, the two top middleweights are restricted to fighting each other verbally instead of in the octagon; something both men have done liberally over the past few months.

Recently, Romero, frustrated by the UFC and Bisping opting to pass him over for St-Pierre – a career welterweight coming off of an almost four year retirement – began calling for an interim title fight against Anderson Silva, citing Bisping’s lack of credible challengers tarnishing the legacy of the division.

Never one to let anything go, Bisping responded to Romero (and some recent similar comments by former champion Luke Rockhold) with a post on Champions, calling Romero a hypocrite for critiquing his title reign when Romero wants to fight Anderson Silva.

“There’s been a lot of talk about interim titles lately, mainly from the two biggest crybabies in the division, Luke Rockhold and Yoel Romero. Luke just started spinning his wheels, so we’ll leave him be until he figures out what the hell he’s angling for. Last week it was Werdum, this week it’s whomever he can put over for an interim shot – I think he’s just turning up the volume to get some attention. Romero, on the other hand, is squarely in my crosshairs.

“All his bullshit rantings about me taking the fight with Dan, and he wants to turn around and ask for an interim title – with Anderson Silva, no less?? Could there be a bigger hypocrite? I think not.”

For reference, Silva is the longtime 185 pound kingpin currently ranked number seven in the division, coming off a win over the eighth ranked Derek Brunson. Bisping’s one title defense was against the thirteenth ranked Dan Henderson.

But Bisping didn’t stop at calling Romero a hypocrite. As per usual, Bisping doubled down on calling Romero a “cheating scumbag” for his past in-cage antics and his previous trouble with USADA.

“We already know Yoel is the biggest cheating scumbag in all the sport. He’ll do whatever he can; grab a fence, he’ll sit on the bench for way too long, he’ll cover himself in water to get a few more seconds of rest between rounds, and of course, he’ll take steroids till the damned cows come home.

“He got lucky because he had a very good legal team around him that helped him with this cooked up story of his. Somehow, they f**king convinced USADA it was a tainted supplement, otherwise known as the oldest trick in the book. Everybody has been going to that well, but one day, it’s going to run dry, and it will be interesting to see what the cheaters come up with next.”

Last year, Romero was suspended following a failed USADA drug test. His sentence was reduced to six months after USADA found that a supplement he was taking was tainted by Ibutamoren. It is the only time Romero has been flagged for any performance enhancers despite competing for many years at the highest levels of freestyle wrestling, including two Olympic cycles.

Bisping wrapped up his post by saying that calls for an interim title fight are “ridiculous” because he is defending his title, even if fans and other fighters don’t like who he happens to be defending against.

“I’m not surprised that he’s calling for an interim title fight, even though it’s absolutely ridiculous. The only time an interim title is needed is if the champion is injured or isn’t defending the belt. Well, I am. I’m defending it against Georges St-Pierre, whether he likes it or not. He’s coming up to the 185-pound limit. There’s absolutely no need for an interim title. The idea of it is laughable, but when you’ve got a guy who has no respect for the sport, a guy who has no honor, this is the kind of thing you come to expect.

“He’s just trying to claw at anything he can. It doesn’t surprise me, because I’ve seen this behavior in the past. He has no honor and will cheat at any opportunity. Now, he’s calling out Anderson Silva. Anderson’s never been that great a wrestler, and we all know that’s Yoel’s bread and butter, so of course he picks the guy with no wrestling and a fading skillset. It’s typical behavior for a typical cheater.

If only these two would actually fight to settle their beef once and for all.
