Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic will headline the UFC 211 pay-per-view (PPV) event against the last man to beat him, former 265-pound titleholder Junior dos Santos, on Sat., March 13, 2017 inside American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.
More on how that fight came to be right here.
Miocic (16-2) dropped a razor-thin unanimous decision to Dos Santos at UFC on FOX 13 in late 2014. Undeterred, the Clevelander bounced back to capture four straight, including a knockout win over Fabricio Werdum to usurp the throne.
That’s why their heavyweight showdown will play out much differently the second time around, according to the champ’s discussion with The News-Herald.
“I’ve got something to prove. I had never gone five rounds before. I wasn’t ready for that. Going five rounds with him — after that I was good. I knew I could hang with anyone after that. I’m ready to go five rounds and for 25 minutes, but I definitely want to stop it early. It won’t be like last time. I’m (motivated) by that loss. I don’t want it to happen again. He hits super hard. It sucks (to be hit by him). You definitely have to watch out for him. He has knockout power. You have to be smart. I hit way harder (than 2014). He’s going to be surprised — big time.”
Miocic is currently the betting favorite.
It’s hard to know what to expect from his opponent. Dos Santos (18-4) struggled to remain active since their first go-round thanks to recurring injuries. In addition, “Cigano” was finished by Alistair Overeem at UFC on FOX 17, but then recovered by outpointing Ben Rothwell last April.
