Nate Diaz earned both Fight of the Night and Performance of the Night bonuses following his upset victory over UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor at UFC 196.
The news was announced at the post-fight conference.
Diaz (19-10), who stepped in the Octagon as a late replacement for an injured Rafael dos Anjos, proved once again that he is one of the most durable fighters in the company. The 30-year-old Cesar Gracie jiu-jitsu fighter withstood the early attacks of the Irishman in the first round, sustaining a cut above his eyebrow that bleed through the fight, but then came back in the second to deliver punishment of his own.
Diaz submitted McGregor with a second round rear-naked choke after the two engaged in a thrilling battle. The Stockton fighter earned $100,000 by earning two Fight Night bonuses. McGregor also earned $50,000 for being part of the Fight of the Night.
Additionally, Miesha Tate (18-5) earned the other $50,000 Performance of the Night bonus after seizing the woman’s bantamweight belt in the co-main event of the night. Being down on the scorecards, Tate entered the fifth round against Holly Holm with no option but to finish the fight. And she did just that. “Cupcake” was able to take down Holm, achieve back control, and sink in a rear-naked choke that ended the fight at 3:30 of round five.
