Welterweight contender Neil Magny has stepped up on short notice to fill in for injured fighters a few times in his UFC career.

He replaced the injured Rick Story at UFC Fight Night 74, taking on Erik Silva on just 12-days notice. It was a risky career maneuver with the 28-year-old New Yorker coming off a loss to Demian Maia in his previous outing.

Magny defeated Silva. He then accepted a fight on 19-days notice, filling in for the injured Matt Brown against The Ultimate Fighter 17 winner Kelvin Gastelum in the UFC Fight Night 78 main event.

Again, Magny captured a win on short notice, defeating Gastelum by split decision.

After defeating Hector Lombard in the UFC Fight Night: Hunt vs. Mir co-main event over the weekend, Magny plans to put short-notice fights behind him and get the fights that are going to lead him to a title shot.

“I feel like I’ve done a great job up to this point fighting whomever the UFC said to fight, anywhere, anytime. At this point, I feel like it’s time to get a little bit selfish and try to get that fight that’s going to get me a title shot,” Magny said during Saturday’s post-fight press conference.

“If I had my way, I’d just wait for a top five opponent and make a title run before the year is over. That’s my goal,” said Magny following his TKO win over Lombard.

“My ultimate goal is to get a title shot, so whoever it is that’s in front that I need to fight to do so, that’s the person that I want to fight.”
