There’s no denying Neil Magny at this point in his career after finishing Hector Lombard via third-round technical knockout in UFC Fight Night 85’s co-main event last night (Sat., March 19, 2016) in Brisbane, Australia.
Despite getting absolutely battered for almost the majority of the first frame, Magny survived the Cuban’s best efforts and was able to make it to the stool between rounds. The fact that Lombard was fighting for the first time in more than one year undoubtedly lent a hand in the veteran’s tiresome approach after being unable to put away Magny.
After regrouping, Magny put it on Lombard in the second, offering relentless ground-and-pound, blistering knees to the body in the clinch and some sneaky grappling. But, despite Magny’s initial offensive onslaught to finish off the second round, referee Steve Perceval refused to pull the plug, due in part to the fact that Lombard had never been finished in his entire career.
Fans and fellow fighters certainly have a right to express their disgust for the unnecessary blows Lombard continued to absorb in the third final frame before the fight was finally called.
Here is some of the outrage captured via Twitter:
C’mon. This fight should be stopped. Even the Australian crowd is booing. Steve Perceval at it again. Magny robbed of a huge stoppage.
