Kayla Harrison won a gold medal in judo at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio this week, so of course every MMA nut on Twitter thinks she should immediately transition to cage-fighting to compete against Ronda Rousey, Cris Cyborg and everyone else. While that might be exciting for an MMA fan, it’s not so much for Kayla.
During a post-event news conference, Harrison was asked whether or not she is thinking about taking her talents to the cage. Her response was an emphatic “NO.”
But the comment that stuck out more was one that referred to the booking of MMA fights and the process that goes into them — being a talker who’s pretty, according to Kayla.
“After a match you shake the person’s hand and give them a hug. You bow to them to show respect, and in MMA it’s not like that … I don’t know if I’m cut out for a world where you get fights based on how pretty you are, and how much you talk, and not necessarily what you’re worth in the ring.”
Well then, if that’s not a call-out of how the UFC has handled their women’s divisions, I don’t know what is.
You can watch Harrison’s comments in the video below. To the footage!
