ONE Championship; Dynasty of Heroes featured some budding names in MMA that continue to grow outside of the United States. Champions Angela Lee and Ben Askren were both able to defend their titles inside the time limit, tightening their grip on their respective weight classes. To go along with their highlight-reel victories, submission ace Garry Tonon defeated Shinya Aoki in their highly anticipated grappling match.
In the main event, Angela Lee submitted Istela Nunes de Souza to improve her record to 8-0. Lee is perhaps the hottest women’s prospect outside of the UFC and ONE FC is well aware of her star power. The atomweight champion forced the submission at 2:18 in the second round.
Lee forced the issue by hitting takedowns, negating the advantage that Souza held on the feet. Lee even had a momentary flash for the dramatics when she attempted a twister in the first round. Her ability to maintain position while peppering Souza with ground and pound created the opening to get the finish.
Askren continued to show that he is a top welterweight as he improved his record to 16-0. In less than three minutes Askren earned the submission via arm-triangle choke at 2:20 in the first round. The two-time NCAA National Champion and former Olympian never faced any danger in this fight. He quickly hit a takedown and forced his way through Agilan Thani’s guard. Thani dropped to 7-1 taking his first professional loss.
In their grappling superfight, Aoki attempted to keep the distance but when the match hit the ground Tonon pushed the issue. Aoki was aggressive in the start of the match but his offense never truly threatened the American. Tonon patiently played his game, creating a scramble from butterfly hooks, forcing Aoki to roll over and eventually move right into the heel hook. Tonon earned the submission at 7:46 in their bout.
