Undefeated welterweight wrestling phenom Ben Askren might be wallowing in the obscurity of the Asian mixed martial arts (MMA) circuit, but according to the former Bellator MMA fighter he couldn’t be happier.
In an interview with Sherdog, the “Funky” one says he’s just fine not competing with the rest of the world’s elite in Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC):
“I’m not really concerned. I’m getting paid really well to do what I’m doing. I drive a 2007 Prius with 200,000 miles on it. I don’t care about having a fancy car. I don’t have a lot of the wants and needs that a lot of people have where I would need to make a $1 million a fight. It would be nice if it happened, but I’m already running a few successful businesses, I’m making a good amount of money to fight and I don’t have expensive tastes. Any way you slice it, I’m gonna be good to go.”
The biological clock is ticking for Askren, who turned 31 years old in July. Although that’s not retirement age yet, he’s no spring chicken.
