Rashad Evans eyeing a potential fight with Maurcio ‘Shogun’ Rua

‘Suga’ Rashad Evans is trying to find his way back to the winning track in the UFC. The fighter, now 36 years of age, returned from a near two-year injury layoff in October to battle Ryan Bader at UFC 192, but was unable to do much and ultimately dropped a unanimous decision loss.

Now the UFC light heavyweight is out to find his next opponent and opportunity to fight.

According to Ariel Helwani on UFC Tonight, Evans would like a bout with Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua next. One of Evans’ managers, Ali Abdel-Aziz, reportedly tells Helwani he and Evans have formally asked the UFC for the bout.

For their part, Shogun’s manager Eduardo Alonso tells Helwani the Brazilian former champion is recovering from shoulder surgery. As of the time of this writing, Alonso says the team has made no decisions about what’s next. Their hope is reportedly for Rua to be cleared to train again by the end of the month.

Evans has been slated to face Rua in the past, most notably at UFC 128. The bout was never made when Evans was injured and then-teammate Jon Jones filled in for Evans. Jones would go on to defeat Rua at the event and become the UFC light heavyweight champion in the process.
