The officials have been selected to oversee the historic clash between undefeated boxer Floyd Mayweather and UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor on Aug. 26.
The Nevada Athletic Commission (NAC) on Wednesday appointed Hall of Fame boxing referee Robert Byrd to oversee the contest. Byrd is a respected name in the boxing world who has refereed since 1983. Of late, he has overseen notable fights such as Andre Ward vs. Sergey Kovalev and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Miguel Cotto.
While Byrd carries no official background in mixed martial arts, his wife Adalaide Byrd is a common sight cageside at UFC events, having served as a MMA judge as recently as UFC 202.
The NAC also appointed the trio of Burt Clements, Dave Moretti, and Guido Cavalleri as the official judges for the boxing match between Mayweather and McGregor. All three are Nevada regulars who have judged at least 10 boxing matches thus far in 2017.
Mayweather vs. McGregor takes place Aug. 26 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The event is expected to be one of the biggest fights of all-time.
