It will be a one and done deal, though, as he will go back down to bantamweight soon thereafter.
Not much has been heard from Renan Barao since suffering a second brutal knockout loss to Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Bantamweight champion, T.J. Dillashaw.
But, the former division king could be gearing up for a mixed martial arts (MMA) return. And when he does, he plans to do it at Featherweight, before dropping back down to the 135-pound weight class.
He said as much in a recent interview with Globo Esporte (via Bloody Elbow):
“I began the year training hard. It’s very likely I’ll get a fight in this first semester. I’m just waiting for the UFC to say something. I gained some weight too, so maybe I could have a fight at featherweight and then drop down again. We’ll see how it goes after I have this one fight at 145.”
As far as tonight’s (Sun. Jan. 17, 2016) UFC Fight Night 81 matchup (details) between Dillashaw and Dominick Cruz — which is set to pop off from the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts — Barao says T.J. has a slight advantage thanks to his busy fighting schedule.
“I guess Dillashaw will have an advantage because he has been fighting. He has had more competition. Dominick Cruz, however, has been competing in wrestling since a very young age so he might not even feel all the time he has been away. It will be a close and tough fight for both of them.”
Prior to his two losses to Dillashaw, Barao was considered to be one of the top pound-for-pound best fighters on the plant, thanks to his unprecedented 31-fight win streak. He’ll look to get back into title contention one UFC matchmakers make the call.
