Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) contender Demian Maia, ranked No. 3 at 170 pounds behind ex-champion Robbie Lawler and No. 1 contender Stephen Thompson, was expecting to get the next crack at the division crown, currently held by Tyron Woodley.
Ahem, Mr. Petty, if you would please…
The waiting is the hardest part,
Every day you see one more [fight] card.
You take it on faith, you take it to the heart,
The waiting is the hardest part!
Despite his intention to remain sidelined until the belt was no longer in dispute (mortgage be damned), the Brazilian appears to have accepted a welterweight showdown against the resurgent Jorge Masvidal.
Where and when?
At the upcoming UFC Fight Night 108 mixed martial arts (MMA) event on FOX Sports 1, according to a report from Combate, set for the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee, on April 22, 2017.
More on that fight card here.
Maia (24-6) capped off a six-fight winning streak with a first-round submission win over the venerable Carlos Condit last August. He was expected to get the winner of Woodley vs. Thompson 1, but their five-round draw put those plans on hold.
And getting the winner of Woodley vs. Thompson 2 could depend on this guy.
Masvidal (), meanwhile, racked up three straight wins to insert himself back into the 170-pound title chase. “Gamebred” has never looked better, planishing Jake Ellenberger and Donald Cerrone in back-to-back technical knockout wins.
Early predictions on this welterweight title eliminator?
