Dan Kelly vs. Derek Brunson is being targeted for UFC Auckland in June.
A middleweight matchup between Derek Brunson and Daniel Kelly is targeted for UFC Fight Night in New Zealand, according to a report from FloCombat. The Sunday, June 11th (Saturday, June 10th for North American viewers) event airs live on Fox Sports 1, with select preliminary card bouts streaming on UFC Fight Pass.
Brunson (16-5) is coming off a close unanimous decision loss to Anderson Silva at UFC 208 in Brooklyn. He’s currently on a two-fight skid, having previously suffered a first-round TKO loss to Robert Whittaker at UFC Melbourne in November. Prior to the two defeats, he’d won five straight, including knockout wins over Uriah Hall and Sam Alvey.
Kelly (13-1) has won four consecutive bouts. The Australian Olympic judoka earned a split decision win over former light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans at UFC 209. Other wins for Kelly during his winning streak include Chris Camozzi, Antonio Carlos Junior, and Steve Mongtomery. Only Sam Alvey has been able to defeat Kelly in his entire MMA career.
As of the March 15th update, Brunson is #9 in the UFC’s official middleweight rankings, while Kelly is not ranked.
UFC Auckland does not have a main event, but a heavyweight bout between Derrick Lewis and Mark Hunt is currently in the works to headline the show.
