UFC 231 has its official backup plan for the main event.
Per Combate, contenders Renato Moicano and Mirsad Bektic will square off in Toronto, Canada, and the Brazilian could fill in should champion Max Holloway or challenger Brian Ortega be unable to make it to fight night.
Renato Moicano (13-1-1) will try to make it three in a row after besting Cub Swanson via submission and Calvin Kattar by unanimous decision in his last couple of bouts. His sole loss came in July 2017, when he was submitted by the aforementioned Brian Ortega.
Mirsad Bektic (13-1) is also looking for his third straight win, following a split decision win over Ricardo Lamas and TKO victory over Godofredo Pepey. Bektic hasn’t lost since UFC 209 against Darren Elkins, who knocked Mirsad out in a come-from-behind win back in March 2017.
It was originally reported that Moicano vs. Chad Mendes was in the works for this card, but evidently that’s not the case. UFC 231 is set for December 8th and will be headlined by Holloway vs. Ortega for Max’s featherweight title. Joanna Jedrzejczyk and Valentina Shevchenko will square off in the co-main event for the vacant women’s flyweight belt.
