Keith Thurman def. Danny Garcia, SD (116-112, 113-115, 115-113)
Saturday night’s Keith Thurman vs. Danny Garcia fight for PBC was a highly anticipated world title unification fight between two world class fighters. Fans expected a lot from this one – what they got was a very well fought technical battle that may not have quite lived up to those expectations.
Garcia and Thurman started fast and furious with a hard-hitting opening round. From there, they settled into a groove where they remained for the majority of the fight. Both had moments of success, with Garcia looking to work the body more. But Thurman was landing the more powerful shots, with his heavy hands hurting Garcia more consistently than Garcia was able to hurt him. Thurman also had a higher punch output throughout the fight, with Garcia throwing less than he typically does in order to avoid the Thurman counter-punch. Those factors were enough to get things done for Thurman on the judges’ score cards, as they gave him the split decision win.
With that win, Thurman pushes his record to 28-0 with 22 KOs. He is now the unified WBA and WBC Welterweight champion. With IBF champion Kell Brook taking on Errol Spence in a PBC fight later this year, another unification fight is not out of the question for Thurman’s future. Garcia sees his first loss here, bringing his record to 33-1.
