Rising prospect Mackenzie Dern returns to cage in October

One of women’s MMA’s top prospects won’t waste much time getting back in the cage.

Mackenzie Dern will return to competition for Legacy FC on Oct. 14 in Dallas, she announced Wednesday on social media. An opponent has not yet been named. The bout will air live on AXS TV.

In her pro debut, Dern was dominant in a unanimous decision win over Kenia Rosas last month at Legacy FC 58.

Dern, 23, is regarded as the best women’s jiu-jitsu player in the world. She owns IBJJF world championships in both gi and no gi and an ADCC title to boot. Dern is a black belt under he father, the legendary Wellington “Megaton” Dias.

The Phoenix native has been training MMA at The Lab in Arizona for the last few years and officially announced her transition to the cage last year. Dern, a strawweight fighter, has received high praise and looks to be a future star due to her skills, look and charisma.

“[Dern] will be bigger than Ronda Rousey before Ronda Rousey lost,” her teammate and former UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson told Ariel Helwani on Monday’s episode of The MMA Hour. “She’s going to be huge. She’s going to be big. She has an excellent work ethic.

“Go look her up, she is a multiple-time jiu-jitsu world champion. She’s won ADCC. She’s won Abu Dhabi. She’s won Worlds. She’s the current No. 1 ranked female jiu-jitsu practitioner on the planet. She has an amazing work ethic. She’s an amazing athlete. She definitely needs to work on her MMA skills, but her ground game is phenomenal. Any woman on the planet goes to the ground with Mackenzie and Mackenzie is going to tap her, or dominate her like she did her first opponent.”
