Rory MacDonald has a problem with broken noses and he isn’t sure how to fix it.

The perennial UFC welterweight contender had his nose shattered in a TKO loss to Robbie Lawler last July at UFC 189. His nose broke again in a unanimous decision defeat to Stephen Thompson in the main event of UFC Fight Night 89 on Saturday night in Ottawa.

MacDonald said at the post-fight press conference that it fractured multiple times in training before the fight with Thompson as well. Surgery is a possibility, MacDonald said, but he doesn’t know if that will work either.

“I don’t know,” he said. “I broke it actually a couple times before this fight. I have no idea what to do. I gave it time, it kept breaking. I don’t know if surgery is gonna be the best route. I really just have to take time. I’d probably at least look into surgery, see if that can make it stronger, because just time off didn’t do sh*t.”

MacDonald (18-4) didn’t fight for 10 months after falling to Lawler. He almost went the whole fight without having his nose busted by Thompson, but it happened in the fifth round during an exchange.

“I don’t know what it was,” MacDonald said. “I was just trying to throw combinations and tuck my head. Something landed and I felt the waterfall start. The familiar feeling.”

MacDonald’s future is murky all around. This was the last fight on his contract, so now he becomes a free agent after losing two in a row. Now, the issue with his nose has cropped up, meaning MacDonald will likely need some significant time off.

When asked about possibly coming back to fight at UFC on FOX 27 in Vancouver on Aug. 27, MacDonald immediately shut it down.
