Rose Namajunas explains why she’s calling out Michelle Waterson — and not Claudia Gadelha

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) women’s strawweight sensation Rosa Namajunas is ready, willing, and able to kick her 2017 fight campaign into full gear. Now all she needs is a suitable opponent to get started.

Which is why she’s asking for Michelle Waterson.

While there is no shortage of viable contenders, like former division No. 1 contender Claudia Gadelha and the rough-and-tumble Jessica Andrade, Namajunas believes a prospective tilt with the “Karate Hottie” is the more marketable showdown.

From her conversation with FOX Sports:

“I don’t know if she’s quite ready for the champ just yet. I’ll fight the champ right now, too but it’d be hard to make a case for it coming off a loss. At the same time, I’m okay with anything but this one just makes the most sense to me. We all know that this is a business, we all know this is the money fight and this is what people want to see. As much as a killer as Jessica Andrade is or Claudia Gadelha, as much as they are formidable opponents and somebody I would like to face one day, it just doesn’t seem like the most marketable thing for me. I think people want to see me fight no matter, no matter who the opponent is, but why not? Why not put two pretty girls in there that can also throw down, that both beat Paige (VanZant), both know taekwondo or karate, it just makes sense. It doesn’t quite make sense for me to take fights that won’t generate the most noise. I’m trying to make money here as well as be the best in the world. So she just makes the most sense for both.”

I’d watch.

Namajunas (5-3) is looking to bounce back from her split-decision loss to Karolina Kowalkiewicz last July, one that snapped a three-fight winning streak and landed her at No. 4 in the latest rankings.

Waterson (14-4), who previously held gold for Invicta FC, is now 2-0 since crossing over to the Octagon in summer 2015. Both victories (including this one) came by way of submission and put the “Karate Hottie” into a position to pick her spots. But will she pick “Thug” Rose?

Time will tell.
