A strawweight title rematch is headed to Brooklyn.
Joanna Jedrzejczyk will get an immediate rematch five months after her strawweight title loss.
Rose Namajunas is set to defend the 115-pound title for the first time against Jedrzejczyk, whom she knocked out at UFC 217 last November to claim the belt in a massive upset. UFC president Dana White confirmed the news at a press conference in Boston on Friday afternoon. Twitter user @TalkMMA first reported the bout.
Namajunas (7-3) is a candidate for 2017’s “Fighter of the Year.” Prior to her title victory, she submitted Michelle Waterson at UFC on FOX 24 last April. Back in December 2014, after a successful run on The Ultimate Fighter 20, Namajunas fought for the inaugural strawweight title against Carla Esparza. She lost via submission. “Thug” is 5-2 in the UFC overall.
Jedrzejczyk (14-1) is one of the best female fighters in MMA ever. Before losing to Namajunas late last year in New York City, she defended the title five consecutive times. She beat the likes of Jessica Andrade, Karolina Kowalkiewicz, and Claudia Gadelha.
UFC 223 takes place at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York on April 7. In the main event, Tony Ferguson faces Khabib Nurmagomedov for the lightweight title (sort of).
