The wrestling champion was rushed to intensive care following a fight between his coach and a State Duma deputy.
Aleksandr Bogomoev, a freestyle wrestling champion from the 2015 European Games in Baku, was hospitalized after interfering in a fight between his wrestling coach and a parliamentarian from the State Duma.
The incident, which occurred on Sunday April 23rd in the rural locality of Ust-Ordynsky, Russia, began in the form of a conflict between freestyle wrestling coach Bair Ilyin and deputy of the regional politician Anton Asalhanov. While the details behind the confrontation remain unclear, reports suggest that the offenders were intoxicated at the time. Verbal jousting evolved into physical assault with life-threatening weapons. Ilyin was armed with an axe, while Asalhanov wielded a knife. The former suffered multiple stab wounds including to vital organs like the lungs and kidneys, while the latter suffered bruises and a concussion.
Bogomoev, who was seemingly involved in the fight, suffered a ruptured spleen after being stuck in the abdomen with a metal pipe. His injury hemorrhaged and he was rushed into intensive care for emergency surgery.
“A crowd gathered, there was a knife fight. Everything happened without a reason really,” Dzambolat Tedeev, the head coach of the Russian national wrestling team, said. “As I heard, Sasha [Aleksandr Bogomoev] has already come to his senses. Crisis averted. I hope he gets out of this situation soon.”
Local law enforcement and an investigative committee in the Irkutsk region are yet to determine the reasons behind the violent brawl.
