It’s a big weekend for Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), as it is for the “Star Wars” movie franchise.
“The Force Awakens,” the seventh film in the main series and the first following Walt Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm in Oct. 2012, is set to bring legions of loyal fans of the critically-acclaimed space opera to movie theaters across the country just as UFC on FOX 17 packs the house inside Amway Center tomorrow night (Sat., Dec. 19, 2015) in Orlando, Florida.
Just don’t count on UFC’s No. 4-ranked Light Heavyweight Ryan Bader (also known as “Darth”) snagging a ticket (via TMZ).
“People will get pissed at me, or the fans will come up to me and say something and I’m like, ‘what the hell are you talking about.’ And they’re quoting Star Wars. My nickname, Darth, was given to me back in the day and I roll with it because it’s better than “Master-Bader.”
Ouch. Try garnering a fanbase in mixed martial arts (MMA) with that nickname forever linked to you.
The 32-year-old wrestler might have seen less than a handful of the Star Wars movies, but he can definitely put the hurt on an enemy stormtrooper, through the use of his Division-I wrestling background.
“Low single. A little duck under, then hit the low single. Get on top of them,” Bader said.
Mind you, Bader’s been ravaging the opposition in the 205-pound class, rattling off career-defining wins over Top 10 stars Phil Davis and Rashad Evans in 2015 alone.
His next Octagon jaunt will take place against former title challenger, Anthony Johnson, in the main event of UFC on FOX 18 on Jan. 30, 2016.
