Sam Alvey is injured and out of his Feb. 21 UFC Fight Night 82 bout opposite Daniel Sarafian in Pittsburgh.
The 29-year-old fighter suffered a broken jaw after absorbing a head kick while training for the fight. The report initially surfaced on the MMA subreddit, /r/MMA, and MMAFighting.com has since confirmed the news with Alvey.
“My face is a little sore,” Alvey told MMA Fighting via text message. “I was greatly looking forward to getting back in the cage. It’s been too long.”
In UFC action, Alvey most recently suffered a first-round TKO defeat against Derek Brunson at UFC Fight Night 73. Prior to that, Alvey pieced together an impressive run in the middleweight division, going 3-0 from November 2014 to May 2015, all via first-round knockout.
The silver lining, according to Alvey, is that the fracture was clean and should heal rapidly and cleanly.
“They (the doctors) basically said it’s the perfect break to have,” Alvey said. “It takes six weeks to heal, but after the six weeks it’s 100 percent or at least very close to that. So if I had to hurt myself badly, this was the way to do it.”
While he heals, Alvey will stay in shape and continue to prepare for a fight.
“I don’t plan on stopping training — just changing it,” he said.
The UFC has not yet confirmed a new opponent for Sarafian, but a UFC official has confirmed the company is currently “working on a replacement.”
