Sergio Pettis returns to bantamweight, meets Rob Font at UFC Milwaukee

Sergio Pettis is changing things up after his loss to Jussier Formiga at UFC 229.

The younger Pettis brother is headed back up to the bantamweight division, his coach Duke Roufus first announced Tuesday in an Instagram post. UFC officials announced Wednesday Pettis has been booked against Rob Font at UFC on FOX 31 in December.

“We feel he is gonna be stronger and more explosive at this Division,” Roufus, the head coach of Roufusport, wrote.

Pettis made his UFC debut as a bantamweight in 2013. He went 3-1 in the division, then opted to drop down to flyweight after a win over Matt Hobar. Pettis lost his 125-pound debut in early 2015, but rebounded with four straight wins, including decisions over John Moraga and Brandon Moreno.

Pettis, who departs the division as the No. 3 flyweight, nearly reached a title shot when he beat former title challenger Joseph Benavidez this past summer. But he fell short in what many considered to be a title eliminator against Formiga last weekend. Formiga out-grappled the 25-year-old en route to a decision win.

Pettis went 5-3 as a flyweight. Since 2015, he has only lost to current flyweight champ Henry Cejudo and Formiga.

Pettis looks to return to the winning column in a quick turnaround against Font, who is coming off a lopsided decision loss to top bantamweight contender Raphael Assuncao at UFC 226 in July. Before that, he stopped Thomas Almeida via TKO. Ranked No. 11 at bantamweight, Font, like Pettis, is 1-2 in his last three outings.

UFC on FOX 31 takes place Dec. 15 at Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee. The main event will be a five-round lightweight bout between Al Iaquinta and Kevin Lee.
