Former welterweight champion Shawn Porter will top the Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor preliminary card on FOX.
With the pay-per-view undercard for Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Conor McGregor (finally) finalized, we also have a full preliminary card set for the FOX broadcast. These are the following matchups you’ll see in the lead-up to the 9 PM ET main card start time on Saturday, August 26th:
Shawn Porter (27-2-1, 17 KOs) vs. Thomas Dulorme (24-2, 16 KOs) – 10 rounds, welterweights (147 lbs)
Juan Heraldez (12-0, 8 KOs) vs. Jose Miguel Borrego (13-0, 12 KOs) – 10 rounds, junior welterweights (140 lbs)
Kevin Newman (7-1, 3 KOs) vs. Antonio Hernandez (9-1, 2 KOs) – 6 or 8 rounds, super middleweights (168 lbs)
Savannah Marshall (Pro debut) vs. Amy Coleman (Pro debut) – 4 rounds (2 minutes per round), super middleweights (168 lbs)
The biggest name here is Shawn Porter, who’s the former IBF welterweight champion, before he lost the belt to Kell Brook in 2014. His most recent shot at winning a major title again ended in a close defeat to WBA champion Keith Thurman in June 2016. Porter is coming off a TKO of Andre Berto in April, and perhaps one of his best wins is a four-round hammering of Paulie Malignaggi. Dulorme has competed at both 147 and 140 pounds, but was billed as a top prospect in the latter division. He most notably fought (and lost by TKO) to Terence Crawford a couple of years ago. Some of his top wins include decisions over DeMarcus Corley, Karim Mayfield, and Hank Lundy. The Puerto Rican is still just 27 years old, so there’s still a good amount of time for him to rebuild himself as a viable contender.
The women’s bout which opens the broadcast is mostly about the UK’s Savannah Marshall, who is the only one who’s ever defeated two-time Olympic gold medalist and current world champion Claressa Shields at either the professional or amateur level. Marshall bested Shields in the 2012 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in China and went on to win the gold medal. Mayweather Promotions signed her to a contract, so they’ll be keen to build her as a future star for women’s boxing.
The Mayweather vs. McGregor FOX preliminary card kicks off live from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada at 7 PM ET/4 PM PT.
