Jake Shields says he believes both the Diaz brothers will return to competition soon.
The Diaz Brothers have been two of the more popular UFC stars in the roster, and while the promotion could use more of their drawing power, both Nick and Nate have been inactive as of late. Dana White had earlier teased that he believes both will come back this year, and now their friend and teammate in Jake Shields have since given an update on their possible returns.
“I think (Nate) will fight again. He still trains a lot. He pretty much trains everyday. He wants to fight and he loves training,” Shields said at the MMA Hour. “He just wants to make sure it’s a money fight, which you can’t blame him. He just made those two Conor paydays, so it’s hard for him to step in there unless it’s a big fight.
“He’s not just looking for Conor, he’s looking for a fight that makes sense, that’s going to bring him a big payday, and a lot of hype.”
As for his older brother in Nick, Shields says that while he hasn’t been as active as Nate, he can easily return soon.
“I think (Nick) will fight again soon,” he said. “He’s been training a little bit. I haven’t been out there (in California), but I’m pretty sure he’s been training a decent amount. I would love to see him fight again. He hasn’t been training as much, but he’s still in good shape and can comeback fast.
“Nick is a hard person to predict. Only Nick knows what he will do. But if I had to guess, I’ll say that he fights again.”
As for possible opponents, Shields says he’s not sure if Eddie Alvarez is the type of fighter that can get Nate excited for a return.
“I think (Alvarez) is a good fight as well, but it’s hard to think it sells as well though,” he said. “Nate’s certainly not afraid of anyone, and I personally would love to see that fight, but I’m not sure if that’s going to sell great, so that’s something Nate would have to think about.
“Tyron Woodley and him, they were talking about putting something together at one point. It’s interesting, I think they were close to coming to terms but it didn’t quite work out,” he said. “I would actually rather see Nick get that Woodley fight, that’s what I would really like to see.”
Nate Diaz hasn’t fought since his second bout against Conor McGregor in 2016. Nick Diaz, on the other hand, has been on the sidelines since his January 2015 bout with Anderson Silva. Prior to that, he also had a two-year layoff.
