Sijara Eubanks releases statement on ‘kidney failure’ that led to UFC title fight withdrawal

Weight-cutting issues are indeed the reason Sijara Eubanks won’t be competing for the inaugural UFC women’s flyweight title on Friday.

Eubanks posted a statement Thursday to Instagram explaining that she was removed from her The Ultimate Fighter 26 Finale championship matchup against Nicco Montaño after suffering “kidney failure” while cutting weight early Thursday morning. Eubanks noted that she has “cut more weight than most male fighters” in the past, but ultimately things didn’t work out this time, as she was transported to the hospital in the early morning hours and pulled from the card.

Eubanks also wished both her replacement, Roxanne Modafferi, and Montaño well ahead of their impromptu title clash.

“First of all, I’m a champion. Point blank,” Eubanks wrote on Instagram. “I will be UFC champion, but it’s God’s will that it won’t be Friday night. I’m a gangster and I’ve cut more weight than most male fighters, and unfortunately there were some miscalculations this cut, no excuses, I worked my ass off and went out on my shield.

“I was hospitalized early this morning for kidney failure but best believe I’ma be right back training and right back after that belt. This game is full of ups and downs, true champs know that and bounce back. Nicco and Roxanne I’m sure will have a great fight, and best wishes to both those ladies. True class, those two. Nothing changes, I’m still the queen and I will claim my throne.”

Eubanks (2-2) was the No. 12 ranked competitor on The Ultimate Fighter 26. She steamrolled her way to the finals with a string of upsets over the tournament’s No. 5 (Maia Stevenson), No. 4 (DeAnna Bennett), and No. 1 (Modafferi) seeds.

The Ultimate Fighter 26 Finale is slated to take place Dec. 1 at the Park Theater in Las Vegas, Nevada.
