Stephen Thompson was shut down rather swiftly by Tyron Woodley once “Wonderboy” asked him for a shot at the title after “The Chosen One” knocked out Robbie Lawler at UFC 201 (see it) this past weekend (Sat., July 30, 2016) to claim the welterweight strap.
But don’t think for one second Thompson’s hopes are going to be dashed that easily, as he declared on “The MMA Hour” that he will be fighting Woodley no matter what, and it’s going to go down at UFC 205 this November at Madison Square Garden in New York.
Plus, Stephen tells Tyron that he needs to defend his title at least once against the rightful contender before he can start calling his shots for “money fights.”
“In my head I was like, ‘You are kidding me, right?’ Yeah, he went out there and he defeated Robbie Lawler, but he took this fight and a lot of people didn’t think he deserved it in the first place, but seconds after winning the title he’s already choosing his fights? I mean come on, who gets that? Who really gets to do that? You are starting to see that a lot more. It’s almost like do the rankings really count? I was upset he said that because he knows I’m the number one guy, he knows I’ve been working hard and I’m on a seven-fight win streak. I think you have to defend the title at least once before you can start picking your shots. I’m not saying he’s scared of me, but he just doesn’t want to fight me.
