A blockbuster heavyweight title fight between two champs is headed to UFC 226 this summer.
A UFC superfight is headed to this year’s International Fight Week.
Stipe Miocic will defend his heavyweight title against reigning light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier in the UFC 226 main event in July. The news was announced on the UFC on FOX 27 weigh-in show on FOX Sports 1 on Friday evening.
Ariel Helwani of MMAFighting.com reported minutes before the official announcement that Miocic vs. Cormier was in the works for later this year.
Miocic and Cormier will also serve as the coaches on The Ultimate Fighter 27, which premieres on April 18.
Miocic is coming off a dominant title defense over Francis Ngannou in the UFC 220 main event last weekend. He picked up a decision win, with 50-44 scorecards across the board. Miocic, who was the underdog to “The Predator,” made history in Boston; he became the first UFC heavyweight champ to defend the title three times.
Cormier defended his 205-pound belt against Volkan Oezdemir in the co-main event of the same card. After a competitive and entertaining first round, “DC” used his wrestling to get past Oezdemir in the second round. He got on top of the challenger and used ground-and-pound until the referee was forced to intervene.
UFC 226 takes place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on July 7. No other bouts have been announced for the card.
