Darren Till: “Right now, I don’t care as long as they give me an opponent in Liverpool”.
Darren Till vs. Stephen Thompson is the fight on everyone’s lips, but Till is more excited about the prospect of fighting in his hometown of Liverpool, England.
Earlier this week UFC president Dana White reportedly stated that Till would take on the top-ranked Thompson in Liverpool, but ‘Wonderboy’s’ father, Ray Thompson, has no interest in his son fighting a lower-ranked opponent.
Till, who shocked the world with his first-round demolition of Donald Cerrone at UFC Fight Night 118, doesn’t really care who he fights as long as it’s on home soil.
“Right now, I don’t care as long as they give me an opponent in Liverpool, Till told Peter Carroll of MMA Fighting in a recent interview. “If Kavanagh wants Gunni, that’s fine, Gunni can get it. If Perry beats Ponzinibbio, get Perry. If Wonderboy wants to fight, let’s get Wonderboy. If Colby wants to fight, get Colby.
“All of these guys are talking about me. The outcome will be the same no matter who I get so I don’t care — it’s a win-win situation for me with any opponent.”
A win over Thompson, though, would catapult Till into welterweight title contention, but the Liverpudlian knows he can’t force him to accept the fight.
“I’m ready for Wonderboy. If he doesn’t think I’m ready or he’s scared, UFC can just give me someone else,” Till said. “I respect him and I think he’s one of the most respectful fighters in the game. If he doesn’t want to fight me there’s nothing I can do about it.”
Thompson, 34, lost out on his chance to win UFC gold against Tyron Woodley but came back to beat Jorge Masvidal last Saturday at UFC 217.
Till, who is oozing with confidence, believes he has what it takes to KO the striking expert and beat him at his own game.
“Wonderboy is obviously the ideal (opponent) because he’s the highest ranked. If you’re going off rankings, he’s the highest. I’ve always said that rankings don’t matter, but I think I can KO Wonderboy,” he said.
“They all think he’s the best striker, so let’s put him against me, a guy who knows he’s the best striker.
“I’m telling you now that I will knock him out. I’m going to put a big nice gash through his head.”
Till stormed into the top ten welterweight rankings with his win over Cerrone and, as of right now, is considered one of the hottest prospects in the division.
