Tony Ferguson: Conor McGregor is next, there’s nobody else in line after UFC 209

Onward and upward.

Top Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) lightweight contender Tony Ferguson is looking forward, not ahead, after his UFC 209 co-headliner against Khabib Nurmagomedov imploded last Saturday night (March 4, 2017) in Las Vegas, Nevada.

More on how that mess unfolded here.

But with “The Eagle” unable to fly in “Sin City,” Ferguson will instead challenge reigning division kingpin Conor McGregor for the 155-pound strap, assuming “Notorious” doesn’t make a pit stop in the “sweet science” during his 10-month hiatus.

“Conor’s next, I hear he might be next,” Ferguson told TMZ. “There’s nobody else in line, buddy.”

It’s unlikely the promotion would attempt another showdown between Ferguson and Nurmagomedov, who were already scheduled to throw down twice before UFC 209, because “The Eagle” can’t seem to keep himself healthy long enough to compete.

There’s a lot of that going around these days.

If and when “El Cucuy” get the McGregor fight remains to be seen, but after winning eight straight fights at 155 pounds, which includes a victory over ex-champion Rafael dos Anjos, anything else would be a step back.

We shall see.
