Although Ferguson didn’t fight at UFC 209, ‘El Cucuy’ sent out a warning to Conor McGregor.

Tony Ferguson missed out on the biggest fight of his career at UFC 209, an interim lightweight title bout against the undefeated Khabib Nurmagomedov, but that hasn’t broken the Californian’s fighting spirit.

El Cucuy was set to face Nurmagomedov in last night’s co-main event, but ‘The Eagle’ was forced to pull out after being hospitalized due to weight cutting issues. Ferguson, 33, was offered a replacement fight against Michael Johnson but turned it down because the title was scrapped and the UFC offered him less pay.

Dana White said Ferguson was ‘devastated’ with the news of Nurmagomedov’s withdrawal but the TUF 13 winner has put Khabib in his rear-view mirror and moved on to bigger things.

“The thing is that he was devastated,” White said at the UFC 209 post-fight press conference at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, per MMA Junkie’s Mike Bohn. “He came over to our offices, and he was as bad as anybody I’ve ever seen when a fight pulls out.”

Ferguson was still in attendance for UFC 209 and received his $250,000 show money, and the 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu fighter warned current lightweight champion McGregor that he’s next.

McGregor, the sport’s biggest star, became the first fighter in UFC history to hold two belts at the same time. ‘The Notorious’ dusted Jose Aldo in thirteen seconds to win the featherweight title at UFC 194 and then added the lightweight strap to his resume when he TKO’d Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205.

McGregor is currently pursuing a boxing fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. but has faced criticism for not wanting to defend his title.

Ferguson, a winner of nine-straight, is currently ranked at No.2 in the official 155-pound rankings but will most likely bypass Nurmagomedov for a title shot.
